Table Runner

Table Runners have been used for many centuries to decorate tables and sideboards when not in use for meals.  Historically heirloom objects were displayed on runners such as chafing dishes, candle sticks and serving bowls.

Today the use of runners have evolved, although many still use them as a decor item, into a trend for use in part of a table setting - i.e. length wise on the table as settings for the host, hostess and serving pieces.  This can be complemented by matching placemats for the guests.  Runners are used width wise to hide a leaf.  They can run within the dimensions of the table or extend beyond. Some still use them on many other pieces of furniture - dressers, buffets, and such.  They are sometime referred to as "scarves".
