Information: Glossary Of Terms

ACETATE

Man-made fiber in which the fiber forming substance is cellulose acetate Example: flax, jute, sisal, cotton, wool, cashmere, silk.

ACRYLIC

Manufactured fiber in which the fiber forming substance is any long-chain synthetic polymer composed of at least 85% by weight of acrylonitrile units. Example: polyester, rayon.

BASKET WEAVE

Variation on a plain weave; two over, two under.

BED SKIRT

Gathered, tailored, or pleated piece of fabric that reaches from the top of the box spring to the floor.

BEDSPREAD

Decorative covering for a bed. Can reach to the floor on either side and usually is large enough to cover the pillows.

BLANKET COVER

Decorative covering for a bed. Smaller than a bedspread and requires the use of a bed skirt.

BURN-OUT PRINTS

Printing with a chemical substance that destroys the fiber in the pattern design print area.

CASHMERE

Comes from the inner coat hair of an Asian Cashmere Goat.

CHIFFON

Lightweight, sheer, plain weave, silk-like fabric.

COMBED

A combed yarn has longer fibers, in parallel position, and more uniformity.

COMFORTER

Decorative covering for a bed that is quilted.

CORDUROY

Medium-weight cotton fabric with length-wise wales.**Thinnest of all natural fibers.

COTTON

Attached to the seed of the cotton plant; finest cotton is Egyptian cotton because of its long, fine staples.

CUT-AND-LOOP PILE

Made with a combination of both loop and cut yarns and can be either level or multilevel.

DAMASK

Heavy, bright, fine-yarn fabric with reverse jacquard design on both sides.

DOTTED SWISS

Lightweight, sheer, fine-yarn fabric with small dotted areas that have been either woven or flocked to achieve the dot effect.

DUVET COVER

Decorative cover used for protection of down comforters.

DYE LOT

Variations in the chemical concentrations from one batch to the next Reversible fabrics.

EMBROIDERY

Art of creating and producing raised designs or motifs on woven fabrics.

EURO OR CONTINENTAL SHAM

26 inch square pillow.

FLANNEL

Light to medium weight, soft cotton usually brushed on both sides.

FLAX

Comes from the stem or stalk of the flax plant; when flax is woven, it produces linen.

HERRINGBONE

Considered a broken twill because both right and left-hand twill resemble the backbone of a herring fish.

JACQUARD

Design that includes very detailed, intricate motifs.

JUTE

Bast fiber that grows in the stem section of a plant in India; Yellow and brown in color; Coarse and harsh.

MANUFACTURED FIBERS

Man-made fibers made from chemical solutions.

MATELASSE

Medium or heavy weight luxurious, jacquard weave, double-cloth fabric with a blistered or quilted surface.

NATURAL FIBER

Found in plants or animals.

PERCALE

Lightweight, plain weave, fine-yarn combed cotton-type fabric.

PIQUE

Medium-weight, crisp, cotton-type fabric with raised dobby designs.

PLAIN WEAVE

Yarn passes alternately one over, one under until the yarn is full.

PLISSE

Lightweight, plain weave, puckered-striped, cotton-type fabric. Slightly resembles a seersucker.

POLYESTER

Manufactured fiber in which the fiber-forming substance is any long-chain synthetic polymer composed of at least 85% by weight of an ester of a substituted aromatic carboxylic.

QUILT

A bed cover made of two layers of fabric stitched together, with interior padding of cotton or feathers held in place by decorative intersecting seams.

RAMIE

Fine, absorbent fiber that is most resistant to mildew and rotting of all plant fibers.

RAYON

Also referred to as viscose.

SATEEN

A silky smooth fabric that has a lustrous sheen resembling satin.

SCREEN PRINTING

Printing formed by engraved rollers.

SHAM

A decorative covering for a pillow on a bed with a decorative flange.

SILK

Continuous strands of filament fiber found in a cocoon.

TERRY CLOTH

Medium-weight, soft, cotton-type fabric with low twist yarns forming surface loops.

WOOL

Fibers that form the covering of a sheep.
