Bath Towels
The grade of cotton used in a towel is a major factor in its quality because the type of cotton adds to the "hand" (the way it feels) of the towel. Cotton is primarily used to manufacture towels because the fibers are naturally absorbent and soft.
When selecting a towel, pay close attention to the fabric of a towel rather than the actual weight. By industry standards, a towel can be called an "Egyptian Cotton" towel as long as it contains at least 10% Egyptian cotton. The balance is usually low quality cotton and results in a coarser hand. Look instead for towels labeled "100% Egyptian Cotton" for maximum absorbency, quality and an incomparable hand.
When it comes to loops, there are shorter and longer loops. The longer the loop the more a towel will bloom and become softer over time. The shorter the loop the less a towel will bloom over time.
Styles of Towels
Terry is the common name for all cotton fabrics that are woven with un-cut loops. The double-sided looped terry towel is the most popular style towel manufactured because it is the strongest and most absorbent.
Velour towels are terry cloth towels in which the loops on the face of the fabric have been cut to create a smoother feel. Velour towels are valued more for their soft velvety look and touch than their absorbency.
Jacquard towels are yarn-dyed terry towels woven on a special hook with an attachment allowing patterns to be woven into the terry pile. Jacquard weaves also have different heights of terry loops and intricate color designs. A jacquard design will appear on both the back and face of the towel. Since they take longer to weave than solid color looped terry towels, jacquard towels tend to be more expensive. Print towels have designs or patterns printed on a solid terry towel. The print only appears on the face of the towel.
Embellished towels contain terry or velour and have additional hand work applied to the face of the towel. These embellishments include embroidered designs, appliqués, and bands of satin or other fabrics sewn to the border edge of the towel.
