- Tell about Sister Parish as inspiration.
Lulu – My mother is my inspiration. I grew up in a house that was cranberry walls in one room, yellow in another, green… every single color, so I think naturally that was something that soaked into my subconscious at a very early age. Later on it was Sister Parish, and the colors that she used, florals kind of continued. I think when you have that, so much of a visual, you can’t help but start to take your own rendition.
– At what point did you decide to pursue interior design as a professional?
Lulu – When I was four.... just kidding. I graduated a year early because I was just ready to go. I didn’t feel like wasting my time on mathematics. So I went to Parsons, and I got accepted. And I kind of just went from there. And it was a journey. I didn’t know what I wanted to do right away I knew I wanted something in the interior world, I knew I was creative, I knew I needed to put them together somehow. One thing just led to another, you kind of follow your path.
- How do trends change in bedding throughout the world?
Lulu - When I started the business, it was really archaic. The Mark Hampton’s were the ones being recognized, white house was the one being published. Now it’s completely not that – it’s a younger generation. A lot of people made money in the internet, so a younger crowd was buying houses, having needs. We started our business at a time where that just happened to work perfectly and meld together. We got very lucky, and since then... New York you would go downtown and it was all fashion. Now you go downtown and it’s all interior design. So there’s definitely a boom, and a lot of younger people doing a lot of amazing things. There are trends... you kind of follow them or you don't. Some fizzle out, some sustain themselves, it's the nature of any business.
- What would you say to the less-stylish that have a very plain room?
Lulu – I don’t think the plain person is going to jump into doing crazy floral. You either love clean sheets or you love something bright and festive. The beauty of this is you can go very geometric – some of the streamlined, plain look if that’s what you’re after on the bed. And it’s still possible with a little bit of color. You can do all greens, all beiges, all pale blue. You have a very Fine line that works throughout the space. You know it depends. If your room is 85 different colors, and if you put 85 colors on your bed, that might not work. If your room is white, and you want to festive up your room, you can put bright green sheets, you don’t have to do too much else.
– Anything else you care to share with us about bedding or other products with your design?
Lulu – The handbags were 100 years ago. When you start a business and everyone comes to you and asks you to do things, you’re like ‘sure, you really want this’. So we tried a lot of things. Some of them were fantastic, and some a great learning experience. One important thing when you’re starting a company is to hold on to the building of the foundation of it. Rather than venture out… I think that’s where a lot of companies go wrong, they try to do 95 different things…
– Then are fabrics and bedding the primary focus now?
Lulu – For me, anything that has a painted edge to it. These kind of have.. you know I hand-paint them first… anyting that has a creative angle, rather than the actual structural level, I get excited to do, So the final product just turns out better. As long as the quality maintains a certain level. We’ve always, as I was mentioning before in discussion, as long as the partnership works in a way where you’re maintaining the quality, and you’re not just selling yourself short as a company just to get your name and the product out there, then usually you’re, for us, pretty happy. And that’s what we look for.
