100% Italian Egyptian cotton

How can something be Italian, Egyptian, and on my American bed?  What do all these adjectives mean? 

Egyptian refers to the type of cotton.  It's not just cotton grown in Egypt - it is a particular type of long-staple cotton originally grown along the Nile.  Egyptian cotton has the longest fibers.  That is, when you pull the cotton from the cotton plant and remove the seeds and waxes, Egyptian cotton has longer fibers available for spinning into yarn than other cottons.  When intertwining strands of yarn to make a larger product, long-staple cotton has fewer connection points, and therefore a greater percentage of area is the natural softness of the cotton.  Additionally, the cellulose in Egyptian cotton has greater strength and absorbency than lower grades of cotton. 

Italian refers to the finishing and weaving of the cotton strands.  Italian mills are recognized as the world's premier mills in terms of quality output, and the generational traditions of Italian weavers and loom controllers result in a consistently fine product with great attention to detail.  One contributing factor to the superiority of European textile finishing are the Eurpoean Union chemical finishing regulations.  While an Indian or Chinese manufacturer may drown its low-grade cotton in chemicals, a European manufacturer like Sferra simply maintains a higher standard. 

Why 100%?  We specialize in 100% Egyptian cotton products.  Unfortunately, your desire for the higher quality of Egyptian cotton makes some retailers fudge the facts.  A product labeled as "Egyptian cotton" needs only to have 10% Egyptian cotton - that means up to 90% is low-grade short-staple cotton used to fill out the product and keep costs down.  So always look for 100% Egyptian cotton from a reputable store. 

A 100% Egyptian cotton sheet will grow softer and more luxurious with every wash.  Manufacturers that maintain the standards of using 100% Egyptian cotton can also be counted upon to have higher quality control, more durable stitching, and additional high-end features such as deeper pockets and turn-backs in pillows.
