Madeira embroidery is the most beautiful handmade embroidery in the world! In 1850, Miss Phelps, an English woman, decided to take back home the precious embroideries she found in Madeira as a cultural and artistic message. Those fine pieces of work, which left the calloused hands of Madeira's countrywoman, were highly praised in the Victorian high society. Later, these rich and elaborate embroideries would be in the limelight all over the world.
Madeira's embroidery cannot possibly be mistaken by any other sort of embroidery. Obviously, other types of embroidery such as English, Renaissance, Venetian and Richelieu have influenced it. Yet, it still holds to a strong identity marked by its unique design and delicacy.
